Break a Leg
Or an Arm
Fame and notoriety are tough to come by. So, let's see if you know who this guy is:
Like everyone else, he began playing basketball at an early age on playgrounds and around town. He eventually tried out for his high school varsity team. He didn't make it. He got cut.
The next year he made the team, but most people don't know about a critical incident that made it possible. That summer, he fell from a tree and broke his right arm. But this didn't stop him. He continued practicing by himself, learning to use his left arm on the basketball court.
The next year, he made the team and became a star player.
This success led to a scholarship to play basketball in college. His talent and style of play excited the fans as he led his team to success. He was drafted into the NBA and quickly became a national sports celebrity.
In the NBA, he took the league by storm and was nearly unstoppable. When the ball was in his hands, his entire team played better. He became a 13-time All Star and won 6 NBA championships. He retired from the game at what many considered to be an early age. But later he returned for a short time to play with another team. And of course, he was inducted into the Hall of Fame.
He was a showman with flair and an entertainer as much as a basketball player. Some considered him a renegade in an era of rather conventional league play. He helped build one of the most iconic teams in the history of pro basketball. Some argue his contribution is as great as—if not greater than—any other single player in the history of the NBA. Watching him was fun, and the fans wanted fun, not fundamentals. He was the catalyst that turned the game into the modern spectacle that fans know it as today.
Who is this 13-time NBA All-Star, 6-time NBA Champion and Hall of Famer? Nope, not Michael Jordan. It is Bob Cousy.
Chasing publicity and fame is like chasing the wind. Instead, just do your best to do what is right and admirable. You cannot control if the world gives you 15 minutes or 15 years of fame. Your story is great even if it is relatively unknown or possibly even forgotten.
So go break a leg, or an arm, today. Just kidding. Be safe.
